Professor Peter Sykes has been announced as the new Head of ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre following Professor David Lloyd’s decision to transition to flexible retirement.

Professor Peter Sykes, who was previously Associate Dean (Enterprise and Innovation) and Director of the Centre for Health, Safety and Environment at Cardiff Metropolitan University, has 30 years’ experience of collaboration with industry.

Professor David Lloyd will remain with ZERO2FIVE on a part-time basis, enabling him to transition to retirement whilst remaining actively involved in key projects and sharing his expertise. Peter will work alongside David during this time, ensuring continuity and a smooth handover for ZERO2FIVE’s staff, partners and stakeholders.

During his tenure, Professor Lloyd has been instrumental in establishing ZERO2FIVE as a leading hub for food innovation, research and industry collaboration. Under his leadership, the Centre has grown in national and international reputation, supporting food and drink businesses to innovate, enhance quality and safety and drive sustainability.

Speaking about the transition, Professor David Lloyd said: “It has been a privilege to lead ZERO2FIVE and work with such a dedicated team of food experts and outstanding industry partners. I am delighted that this flexible arrangement will allow me to continue contributing while supporting the next phase of leadership for the Centre.”

He added: “Peter’s background in environmental health, which included audits of food sites and his extensive knowledge of food waste control, make him the ideal person to fill the role. His experience of managing research and enterprise units within Cardiff Metropolitan University will also be a major benefit to ZERO2FIVE and its staff. I am excited to work with Peter in the coming months to support the smooth transition of management of the Centre into a new era.”

Speaking about his appointment, Professor Peter Sykes, said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Head of ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre, an organisation that delivers vital support to the Welsh food and drink manufacturing industry.
